United Way Bike Tour Continues

From Bothwell to Chatham, the second leg of the United Way Campaign kick-off bike tour gets underway this morning. Jan Brunschot–with the Red Cross– drove one of the vehicles that accompanied the riders, and says the United Way’s support is essential. The idea of the two-day tour to highlight the services and organizations the United Way support. The ride wraps up in Chatham this afternoon, followed by the campaign goal announcement at 4:30 at the YMCA.

Ontario A-G Touts Proceeds of Crime Program

Ontario’s attorney general is singing the praises of the province’s proceeds of crime program. Chris Bentley was in Chatham yesterday, announcing $32,000 for new surveillance equipment for Chatham-Kent Police. Bentley says the Civil Remedies Act, which has been in place for eight years, is an invaluable tool. Police and Crown Attorneys work together on the seizures which have to be court approved, and the assets are held in trust until released, again by the courts.

Lakers Win Exhibition Game

In Junior C exhibition hockey action, the Wallaceburg Lakers got by Alvinston 5-3. The Lakers home opener is set for next Wednesday against Blenheim.

In Junior B pre-season action, the Leamington Flyers lost 3-1 to the London Nationals, and the LaSalle Vipers downed Lambton Shores 11-5.

Brewers Win WCBL Title

The Maple City Brewers are the Western Counties Baseball League Champions. The Brewers took the title with a 5-3 victory over Courtright. Denny Toth had two doubles for Chatham, pitcher Matt Rylett got the win.

Programs Kick off Next Month

Programs at the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village will continue to be offered gratis, thanks to a donation from Dowler-Karn in Chatham. Dan Kelly,with Dowler-Karn says the $2,100 came from customer donations, and matching donations from Dowler-Karn and Imperial Oil. It’s the first time the company has donated to the safety village, but Kelly thinks it will be the start of a long relationship.

Another incumbent has stepped into the crowded race for a seat around the council table in the upcoming municipal election. Anne Gilbert is looking to hold on to her seat in Ward Six. With the latest nomination, there are now 19 candidates vying for six seats representing Chatham.

Expanding police surveillance ability

Chatham-Kent police have new remote controlled surveillance video equipment thanks to a 32 thousand dollar grant that game from criminals in the first place. They plan to use it to monitor grow-ops, drug dealers and other criminal activity in the area. Attorney General Chris Bentley was at police headquarters this morning to make the announcement. The money comes from the Civil Remedies Act which allows police to seize illegal goods and items used in committing a crime and the profits of crime. The money goes into a provincial pool and police services can apply for grants for specific applications.

Wind Turbines Damaged

Chatham-Kent Police are looking for suspects after several wind turbines were tampered with. Authorities say $3000 worth of copper wire was stolen from turbines along Talbot Trail. Meantime, police are also looking into a report of a damaged turbine on 11th Line in Raleigh Township. No word on the extent of the damage done in that case.

Charges Laid In Chatham Crash

Charges have been laid following a single-vehicle crash in Chatham overnight. Police were called to the Third Street Bridge shortly after 1:30. Officers say the driver involved was showing signs of impairment. The 34-year old Harwich man was taken to police headquarters and charged with impaired driving and failing to provide breath samples.
