The 87th annual Buxton Homecoming is underway.
The History and Geneology Conference goes Friday, with a slew of other events planned though Monday.
Assistant Curator of the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum Spencer Alexander expects 3,000 to 4,000 visitors. “I would says the majority of them are not descendants but they’ve come with a descendant in the past,” says Alexander. “I expect a thousand of the people that would be here would be descendants of the early settlers of the Buxton Settlement.”
There’s also five bus loads coming from Florida. “It all started over the book written by Christopher Paul Curtis, called Elijah of Buxton,” says Alexander. “A teacher read her class the book and as a result of that the Jack and Jill of America, the Florida Chapter, is bringing approximately 250 people here.”
