We were talking on-air this morning about my stellar night – potentially broken toe, very little sleep, and nightmares. The toe is entirely my own fault, but the lack of sleep bothers me. I was too busy for my usual afternoon nap, so should have slept like a baby last night. Not so much. I tossed and turned until almost 11:30, and then once I did sleep, was haunted by bad dreams. The details always get fuzzier by the light of day, but the creepy feelings linger. What brings bad dreams on? Is there anything you can do to keep them at bay?  I think the worst is when you wake up from a nightmare, and then get plunged right back in once you fall asleep again. What kinds of tricks do you use to clear the monsters out of your head?

    Robin,
Usually I find I have to write the nightmare down on paper, and sometimes by the time I finish detailng the dream, the effect is diminished.

Try not to miss your nap, you get up really early and your brain needs to close down for a bit in the afternoon. I find that even if I get a 10 minute snooze it helps with the quality of my sleep during the night. This seems to get more important as you age…now that I’m in my 50’s if I don’t pay attention to my sleep habits then I’m likely to wake a few times during the night which is a nightmare in itself….
